As Harry Potter invades first-run theaters, the bargain houses don't offer much in the way of competition. ---

Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer certainly doesn't teach the Potter series any valuable lessons in how to adapt youth-friendly literature. This version of  Megan McDonald's charming character turns everything into frantic, Nickelodeon-ized nonsense. You'll be happier reading a book.

Audiences weren't much quicker to embrace Jumping the Broom, a comedy drama about a wedding that brings together two African-American families -- one well-to-do, the other decidedly more middle-class. Our contributor Andrew Wright described it as a combination of class-conscious drama, raucous sex comedy and faith-based morality tale that "inelegantly whumps them all together into an unappealing, barn-broad blob."
