"Big" is the key word tonight. Big sounds and big bands dot the evening-time forecast for this fine evening.---

Under the musical direction of pianist and band leader Thomas Lauderdale, the “little orchestra” out of Portland, Oreg., Pink Martini, have played their timeless orchestral Pop around the world and back. Of their musical style, Lauderdale says it’s “music of the world without being world music. If the United Nations had a house band in 1962, hopefully Pink Martini would be that band.” Sit on a blanket or sway with your loved one to that, as they set up at Red Butte Garden tonight, starting at 7:30 p.m.

Another orchestra, a little bigger, Utah’s own symphony, to be exact, will play a benefit show at Abravanel Hall to raise awareness on homelessness.

A spectacle of marching musicians will take over Rice-Eccles Stadium tonight for the biggest assemblage of music-makers. It's a drum and bugle corps competition, featuring some of the nation’s best troupes bleating out some ra-ra-ra.

End the evening at Urban Lounge with a local rock showcase, featuring Red Bennies, Birthquake and Plastic Furs.

Oh, and how could we almost have forgotten: American Idols Live will feature a sorry cast of second-placers singing some glorified karaoke (and maybe some originals) at the Maverick Center tonight. On the plus side, you can give them your own scathing criticism from your personal peanut gallery.
