Melodious success in Provo

A collaborative effort between Velour Live Music Gallery owner Corey Fox and several local artists/videographers—Dean Cheesman, Matt Eastin and Aaron Hymes—began in February 2010 as a way to showcase Provo’s vibrant music scene. “My motivation with this is that there’s such a great scene down here, I wanted to do these videos to enhance these bands,” says Corey Fox, adding their goal is to produce one a month.
As a side note, their name comes from a rowdy Provo bar at the turn of the 19th century that Fox discovered in a history book, he says.
Similar to Websites like San Francisco-based Yours Truly and the French La Blogotheque, Occidental Saloon offers high-quality videos of live musical performances set in interesting locations. “Ours [compared to those sites] are a little more produced, I think. We walk the line of a music video and a street performance,” Fox says.
Earlier this week, The Occidental Saloon threw a party at Velour to celebrate their video for Neon Trees’s tune “Animal” hitting the two million views mark. They also premiered their latest video, which featured the lullarock soundscapes of Book on Tape Worm.
The Occidental Saloon has produced nine other music videos for local artists, including Joshua James, Parlor Hawk, Archer's Apple, Imagine Dragons, The Moth and the Flame, Fictionist, Isaac Russell, Shark Speed and Emily Brown. Additionally, the iconic indie legend John Vanderslice became their first national artist to record a video when he made a stop at Velour in April.
