Just as the stench of the year's lousiest animated film was clearing out of first-run multiplexes, it's time for it to invade the bargain theaters. ---
Hoodwinked Too!: Hood vs. Evil appeared just when you thought it was safe to forget about the wretched 2005 original. But no, we needed another miserably animated, smug tale of fairy-tale characters involved in spy shenanigans, overflowing with pop culture quotes as though a reference alone constituted a joke. If you love your children, don't take them.
Your more-resilient tweens won't suffer any lasting damage from Prom, but it's also hard to figure why this was any more deserving of a theatrical release than a dozen other made-for-Disney-Channel time-wasters. A half-dozen different plots about teen romantic angst swirl around in a non-threatening confection, almost all of which you could see on basic cable right now.
There's at least a degree of efficiency and restraint in the inspirational fact-based Soul Surfer, about Hawaiian teen surf champion Bethany Hamilton (AnnaSophia Robb) and her recovery from the shark attack that took her left arm. It's a formulaic drama, but there's some great surfing footage, and just enough energy to get past its generic uplift.
