It’s a battle of American Historic Idols as Salt Lake City’s Yalecrest neighborhood and Sevier’s Fremont Indian State Park compete with 98 other American historical sites for $25,0000.---

The National Trust for Historic Preservation is holding its annual “This Place Matters” contest where communities vote for their hometown historic gems in a battle for a $25,000 grand prize and for a $10,000 and $5,000 second and third prize. This year two Utah locales have emerged from the initial qualifying round of 265 competitors to enter the final 100—Salt Lake City’s Yalecrest neighborhood and Sevier’s Fremont Indian State Park (pictured).

Yalecrest as part of its pitch has put front and center the battles the local Yalecrest Yes nonprofit advocacy group has had to wage against Monster homes and greedheads of the Legislature eager to demolish the 375-acre neighborhood’s nationally recognized historic homes.

Friends of Fremont Indian State Park and Museum are hoping some of those dollars will help preserve their small community’s ancient rock art displays, living cultural tributes to the Fremont peoples, and natural hiking trails, ATV trails, campgrounds and picnic sites—especially in light of an ever dwindling maintenance budget.

The area is a unique nexus to the small community’s future that is uniquely anchored to the park’s historic past--one populated by the legacy of ranchers, native peoples, miners, and the mountain men that came before.

Utah’s contenders will have stiff competition going against famed taverns, bridges, schools and downtowns across the country, facing off against sites in 40 states and Guam.

Votes will be accepted throughout the month of June and are restricted to one vote per person.
