The week’s top contenders show how contemporary classics and classical can be.---

The iconic composer Ennio Morricone’s scores gets a royal treatment by Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi, with appearances by Jack White and Norah Jones and an assemblage of the original orchestra members. Rome is lush and continually rewarding with each subsequent listen—ddefinitely worthy of checking out today.

When you have a classically-trained opera singer that is wary of the conventional moors of the genre and opts instead for synthy, distorted electronica, you get Austra. Led by Katie Stelmanis, the trio’s latest release Feel it Break is an interesting jaunt into divergent and haunting sonic soundscapes.

Ben Harper goes classic rock on Give Till It’s Gone. He gets a little help from Jackson Browne and Ringo Starr (?!). Leaving behind the glory days of his gospel-meets-jam-band leanings with The Innocent Criminals, Harper still has a sweet voice and catchy hooks. Check out “Rock ‘n’ Roll is Free” for a clear look at this new direction that he’s headed in.

In other releases: Parachute drops The Way it Was and master banjoist Bela Fleck reunites with the original Flecktones lineup on Rocket Science.
