Concert review: Eddie Spaghetti at Burt's Tiki Lounge

Eddie Spaghetti is like a box of chocolates. An urban-redneck, country-rockin', in-league-with-Satan box of chocolates, and probably laced with something illegal but undeniably fun.---

Wednesday night the Supersuckers leader stopped by Burt's Tiki Lounge to headline a show on his tour supporting his new solo album, Sundowner. And while you're never sure exactly what you're going to get from a solo Spaghetti show, the constant stream of fan requests that Spaghetti took from the audience leaned heavily on the Supersuckers' back catalog.

Obviously, that's not a bad thing. And it's hard to imagine fans of Spaghetti's band and his solo work are two different groups. If you love Spaghetti when he's leading his band through nearly three decades of decadent rock 'n' roll, chances are you love it when he takes it down a notch and scratches his country-music itch.

Sundowner definitely leans on Spaghetti's country side, and at Wednesday's show it was just Spaghetti on acoustic guitar, accompanied by only the Supersuckers' lead guitarist, "Metal" Marty Chandler. The high twang factor did nothing to decrease the number of devil-horn salutes thrown in the air through the night, nor did it keep Spaghetti from delivering a highly entertaining show.

With the show falling on April 20, ie. 4/20 (dude!), Spaghetti naturally delivered a couple of weed-friendly Supersuckers songs early on, with "Killer Weed" and "Non-Addictive Marijuana." And besides asking for anyone with any drugs worth dabbling in to meet him at the t-shirt stand after the show, Spaghetti also delivered old Supersuckers classics like "I Want the Drugs" and "Pretty Fucked Up." Sensing a theme here?

Among the other old favorites tackled by the dynamic twosome: "Going Back to Tucson," "Paid," "Roadworn and Weary," "Barricade" and "Creepy Jackalope Eye." And from the few songs Spaghetti delivered from Sundowner, the highlights were a reworked version of old Supersuckers' tune "Marie," "Girl on the Billboard" and the hilarious "Jesus Never Lived on Mars."

As always, Spaghetti ended with "Born with a Tail," encouraging the people filling Burt's to offer a middle-fingered salute toward the stage. Only this time, he busted out a camera and took a few shots of the scene as the crowd sang along to proclaim that they are, like Spaghetti, "in league with Satan."
