Books & Authors

Wayne Iverson: Hobo Sapien

City Weekly contributor Jacob Stringer writes, “Billed as some weird literary cross between the NPR yarns of Garrison Keillor, the Beat poetry of Jack Kerouac and the peaceful philosophy of Gandhi, Wayne Iverson’s Hobo Sapien: Freight Train Hopping Tao and Zen is filled with Western adventure, Eastern spirituality and a bit of everything in between.”

Wayne Iverson: Hobo Sapien @ Ken Sanders Rare Books, 268 S. 200 East, 801-521-3819, April 16, 7 p.m., Free.

Sporting Events

Salt Lake City Marathon

Because of the nature of this blog, let’s focus on being a spectator, which is free. Being one of the celebratory 20,000 onlookers, surrounded by music and food, is pretty swell. At both starting lines, guest speakers will say a few inspirational words as onlookers and participants gather for the first whistle. Along the final mile of the course is a “celebration station” for holding up motivational signs, cheering and giving out high-fives. At the glorious finish, the Finish Line Festival offers a chance to kick back, consume some refreshments and slap some backs after one inspiring day of motion.

Salt Lake City is getting its first official bike corral—located at Squatters Pub Brewery. Mayor Ralph Becker and Council Member Luke Garrott will unveil the apparatus at 11 a.m. All day, Squatters will offer some grub at a discount for anyone that rides their two wheeler to the restaurant. That includes The Jesse James Sandwich—chopped Top Sirloin sautéed with red peppers, onions and a sweet sloppy Joe sauce on an ale-infused spent grain bun and served with choice of side—discounted from $10 to $6 and the veggie burger for $6.

@ Squatters Pub Brewery, 147 West 300 South, Thursday, April 14, all day.

Film Screenings

SLC Film Center: Skiing Everest

Skiing Everest is the first documentary about the small elite fraternity of high-altitude skiers who climb the highest peaks in the world in pure Alpine style, carrying their skis and declining to use supplemental oxygen. At the top of the world, high in the Death Zone, they lock into their skis and challenge the most dangerous slopes in the world - under weather conditions that are as perilous as the thin air, hidden crevasses, and 10,000 ft. sheer faces that drop into Nepal and Tibet far below. Director Q&A to follow screening

SLC Film Center: Skiing Everest @ Main Library, 210 E. 400 South, Tuesday, April 19, 7 p.m., Free.
