This weekend, take the opportunity to catch up on three Oscar-nominated performances at bargain theaters--two of those performances in one movie. ---

Joel and Ethan Coen's remake of True Grit scored nominations for Hailee Steinfeld as the frontier girl looking for justice after her father's murder, and for Jeff Bridges as the alcoholic lawman, Rooster Cogburn, who helps her track down the killer. The film itself was also nominated for Best Picture, and it may be the Coens' most deeply-felt film yet--while still terrifically entertaining as simple genre adventure.

Nicole Kidman also scored an Oscar nod in the adaptation of David Lindsay-Abaire's Rabbit Hole, playing a mother still dealing with the afternshocks of the death of her young son. It's a solid, emotionally affecting story, even if John Cameron Mitchell's attempts to "open it up" for film don't always work.

As for this week's other new offerings at the dollar theaters, let's just say Oscar recognition next year is unlikely. The Roommate presents a preposterous collegiate variation on the "fill-in-the-blank from hell" thrillers of the 1990s like Single White Female. And Martin Lawrence dons the fat-suit drag costume one more time--along with Brandon T. Jackson--for Big Mommas: Like Father Like Son. Like yikes.
