Get your weekend started with one of Portland's best bands, or one of the other worthy gigs in town Thursday.---

Kilby Court is hosting Portland's Dolorean, pictured, whose leader Al James has a magical way with rootsy tales of heartbreak. The band's new album, The Unfazed, is one of the best I've heard so far this year. You'll want to get to Kilby early, because Dolorean plays first, before Holy Sons and Castanets. This is the musical highlight of the night in my book, but there are plenty of other options.

Bar Deluxe is hosting a night of "Girl Power Reggae," featuring Sister Carol, Afro Omega and Sarah B, while The State Room has a headlining gig by Janis Ian. The Urban Lounge has The Mumlers, Coyote Hoods and Jared Mees and Grown Children on tap. In Provo, Cody Taylor is hosting a CD release party at Velour, joined by The Second Estate, Wolves and Donnie B.

A potentially interesting lecture is going down tonight at the Main Library, where Utah Supreme Court Chief Justine Christine Durham is delivering a talk on A Legacy of Service: Women in the Law; it's free and starts at 7 p.m.
