Lounge Act Tuesday: Giving Love a Bad Name

It's a remarkable feast of music for a Tuesday in Salt Lake City, from the hair-farmers in Bon Jovi headlining the Tox Box to the uber-cool Menomena stopping at Kilby Court, with plenty of other options to boot.---

Bon Jovi's had a remarkable run, one I never would have predicted back when they were selling out the Salt Palace at the height of their Slippery When Wet/New Jersey fame. How they managed to avoid becoming another retro-hit-parade act like Poison is beyond me, but somehow Jon Bon Jovi managed to convince fans he was more Bruce Springsteen-lite than Sunset Strip-lite. He's even scored some country hits in Bon Jovi's more recent years. Tonight, Bon Jovi play at EnergySolutions Arena

Over at Kilby Court, the battling trio of Menomena headlines a show that should be a beauty, full of the winning sounds from the band's excellent 2010 release, Mines. Just a hop and a skip away at The State Room, newgrass kids Infamous Stringdusters are headlining a show. And those looking for something distinctly modern (yet still retro/'80s-style to my ears) might want to get to Bar Deluxe for She Wants Revenge with The Suicycles and The Californian.

The Urban Lounge hosts South African rockers The Parlotones, hot off a series of SXSW gigs, while The Complex extends the St. Patty's celebration even further with the arrival of The Saw Doctors, pictured, an Irish rock band first discovered by The Waterboys' Mike Scott.

If you're more in the mood for a flick than some music, check out the Salt Lake Film Center's free screening or members of Sunset Boulevard, a true classic, in 35mm format, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Check out the Film Center's Website for info on becoming a member if you're not one already.
