Beware the Boot!

Starting Wednesday, March 23, Salt Lake City residents with outstanding parking tickets may just find a boot on their car, even if it ‘s parked right outside their house.---

New parking services changes go into effect this week as Salt Lake City Parking Enforcement will be on the prowl for parking ticket scofflaws, ready to give them a handy reminder to pay outstanding tickets. That reminder comes in the form of a boot on their car.

Drivers who have two or more outstanding tickets are subject to having a special boot placed on their car at any time (unless the car is parked on private property). The boot comes with a toll-free number that can be called 24 hours a day, seven days a week to make payments, and once all the fines are paid a number will be given to the individual to use to unlock the boot.

Then you get a free car boot right? Wrong. Unreturned boots will mean more fines.

Those getting the boot will then need to return the boots to the city’s Parking Compliance Office at 212 E. 600 South. Motorcycle drives however will still have to call Parking Enforcement to come remove their boot during regular business hours, however, since the boot is not safe to be carried on a motorcycle.

Also if a boot remains on a car for more than 24 hours, unpaid, the car will be towed.

The city is getting ready to boot ticket scofflaws as a means of collecting needed city revenue. City officials have estimated residents owing as much as $1.3 million in outstanding fines--money that could be used to fund vital city services. If that figure includes your unpaid tickets and you would rather turn yourself in so you can set up a payment plan now, at your convenience, rather then when you’re late to work and walk outside to find you’ve been booted--and then have to pay the total amount all at once--the city encourages you to do so by visiting their online payment service or by going in person to the Salt Lake City Justice Court, 333 S. 200 East (open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.)
