Lounge Act Weekend: Gallery Stroll, GaGa & Galactic

Under the brightest full moon in 18 years, Gallery Stroll takes over downtown tonight. Some of the must-see exhibitions are Homage at Rio Grande Gallery, Duston Todd’s creepy, mysterious Sleep is the Cousin of Death at Saans on Broadway and, up at Finch Lane Gallery, Susan Beck, Bonnie Sucec and Ryan Peterson have a shared exhibit.
Drawn II at Nox Contemporary features Heidi Moller Somsen breaking away from her tradition medium of sculpture for a performance art piece at 7 p.m. "Although my art practice has focused primarily on figurative sculpture for the last 15 years, I have become increasingly interested in performance as a way to live out the gestures and stories of some of my ceramic figures," Somsen says. Happy strolling. Additionally in the performance art realm, on Saturday at 6 & 8 p.m, Deke Weaver performs Elephant at the Salt Lake Art Center.
Save it up for Saturday evening because Lada Gaga is taking over town. Our own Jesse Fruhwirth will be reviewing the event, so stay posted. Gaga’s fabulous DJ Lady Starlight will rock the after-party at the Complex. Or opt out to see Slowtrain Records recording artist Alexis Gideon at Sugar Space at 8 p.m. Gideon is a multi-media hip-hopera phenom out of Portland, Oreg. and will be showing Video Musics II: Sun Wu-Kong, which is his unique take on Journey to the West. Afterwards catch the infectious, dance-y grooves of Brooklyn trio MEN at the Urban Lounge.
New Orleans’ own modern funk pioneers Galactic will play The Depot on Sunday. Check out our interview with keyboardist Richard Vogel. Elsewhere, it seems St. Patrick’s Day festivities just won’t die. Kate MacLeod and Kat Eggleston will play an excellent set of tradition Celtic music at Rose Wagner, in case you missed that genre earlier this month.
Then rest up and get ready to have your own mini SXSW next week, as plenty of bands returning home from Austin will be dropping by and basking us in sonic awakening. I love Spring.
