Ricky Gervais said he was going to deliver a scorched-earth performance as the host of the Golden Globes last night, and he delivered—why is everyone so damned surprised today? And really, what other reason was there to watch? ---

What’s new tonight:
Chuck (NBC) It may be a holiday for most of you (not here, of course), but there’s still a whole lotta new TV on tonight—foremost being the return of Chuck, which hasn’t aired a fresh episode since November 2010. In “Chuck vs. the Balcony,” Chuck is in French vineyard country on a mission to track down a powerful nano-chip (which I believe are tiny, tiny Doritos), as well as take Sarah on a romantic getaway. Yes, this otherwise solid series is still doing the whole “Chuck & Sarah” thing, even though we all know she could jump way better sharks than him—c’mon, look at her. Maybe she should meet The Cape …

Harry’s Law (NBC) Series Debut: Kathy Bates is Harriet Korn, a hotshot patent attorney who’s just been fired—what else is a 60-year-old gal to do but launch her own scrappy start-up firm on the “bad” side of Cincinnati? Armed with a crew of good-lookin’ young lawyers and some homespun wisdom, Harriet’s Law just might last longer than Jimmy Smits’ Outlaw—like, maybe a week or two longer. Have some more Minute to Win It in the can, NBC?

Being Human (SyFy) Series Debut: The not-bad-at-all American version of a British hit—read all about it in True TV (Item 2).

Skins (MTV) Series Debut: Another Americanized version of a British hit—with far lousier results. Seems that edgy ol’ MTV just couldn’t get away with all of the sexy teen sex of the original Skins (which is about, well, sexy teens having sex with other sexy teens and then whining about the consequences—and then going back for more sex), so this is the definition of Watered-Down Rip-Off. Will ya just bring back Warren the Ape, already?

Also new tonight:
The Bachelor (ABC); How I Met Your Mother, Rules of Engagement, Two & a Half Men, Mike & Molly, Hawaii Five-0 (CBS); The Cape (NBC); House, Lie to Me (Fox); Jersey Shore (MTV); Greek, Pretty Little Liars (ABC Family); Tabitha’s Salon Takeover (Bravo); Intervention, Heavy (A&E); WWE Raw (USA); Conan (TBS)

Preview: Sarah’s greatest, uh, hits (and more) from Chuck
