A little something for everyone comes to bargain theaters this weekend: a little comedy, a little drama, a little music, a little kid stuff. ---
The broadest appeal may come from Megamind, the animated adventure featuring Will Ferrell as the voice of a supervillain facing an existential crisis. It's a high-energy production full of clever gags, and a perfect showcase for Ferrell's talents.
Laughs a bit more adult-oriented come from the buddy road-trip Due Date, starring Robert Downey, Jr. as an uptight businessman forced to hitch a ride with wacky Zack Galifianakis to get home in time for his son's birth. The premise may feel like a retread of Planes, Trains and Automobiles, but the two stars provide solid laughs on the way to the obligatory (and unnecessary) moments of emotional catharsis.
Cher and Christina Aguilera were supposed to provide the star power in the backstage musical drama Burlesque, but there's not much they can do with a premise that tries to mix a little Glee with a little Cabaret with a little All About Eve. Even as it's trying way too hard, it never even manages to be so bad it's interesting.
And finally, there's Tyler Perry's For Colored Girls, adapting the beloved play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf. Can Perry tone down his propensity for melodrama to take on a literary adaptation? It'll only cost you $1.50 to find out.
