The first local roller-derby news of the 2011 comes from the new Red Rockettes Recreational Roller Derby League--as in, no competition, drama or knocking each other around, just skating. Yes, it can be done. ---

The press release info from RRRD:

Red Rockettes Recreational Roller Derby League will start their second 12-week session on Thursday, Jan. 6. The league is Salt Lake's newest and puts the emphasis on fitness, health and developing supportive female friendships through the game of roller derby. Full training will be given for all abilities. Red Rockettes has a place for every skater from beginner to veteran.

The league aims to be a place where beginners can start to learn the sport of roller derby, as all minimum skills will be taught, and veterans can improve their skills, as the course will include weekly scrimmaging.

The course will run every Thursday evening at the Wasatch Roller Derby warehouse (1415 S. 700 West) from 7:30-9:30 p.m. for 12 weeks. The course costs $60 for rookies and $80 for all others. Skaters need to provide all equipment, skates, helmet, knee, elbow and wrist pads, and mouth guard. WFTDA insurance is required and costs $50 per year.
