Lounge Act Monday: It's Oh So Quiet

As expected, it's pretty damn quiet around town. Unless you're a fan of a cappella music!---

I am not myself, but I know Utah has a soft spot for the unadorned voices who can engage an audience sans instruments. I've spent a professional lifetime trying to ignore acts like Colors and their Utah County-bred ilk. But, if you're just not ready to give up on Christmas and move on to New Year's celebratin', consider a jaunt to the Rose Wagner Monday eve, where seven-headed a cappella crew Octapella (pictured) headlines a show.(Ya, I don't get why they're called Octapella, either).

Elsewhere, Mo's Neighborhood Grill is hosting an open-mic poetry slam that should offer a nice respite from Xmas dinner leftovers and the non-stop holiday tunes that are finally filtering out of the muzak flow at local businesses. The fun starts at 8 p.m.

You might want to just catch a flick, given the scarcity of options. I've seen both Black Swan and True Grit in recent days, and they're both worth your time, especially for fans of Darren Aronofsky's creepy style or the Coen Brothers' smooth way with Westerns.
