Poor homophobes. Apparently, their constitutional right to bash gays in schools is being violated by anti-bullying district policies. Two Ann Arbor, Mich., high school students were disciplined Oct. 20 for disruptive behavior during an econ class after they called out the teacher, Jay McDowell, for wearing a purple Spirit Day T-shirt, regarding it as an opportunity to mouth off.
But, as it turns out, as long as you're mouthing off against gays, disrupting class is a form of religious expression -- at least, according to homophobic nutjobs. McDowell was reprimanded by district officials for -- get this -- intolerance and bullying. (Intolerance of intolerance? Bullying bullies?)
The teachers union (of which McDowell is president) issued a statement supporting him. But perhaps the most striking and touching defense of McDowell were the words of Graeme Taylor, a young and articulate gay student, at a recent school board meeting:
Now, that is one bright kid!
