Lounge Act Tuesday: There's a riot goin' on

To quote the mighty Urge Overkill: "It's like the song Sly sang, there's a riot goin' on" Tuesday, but it's the kind of riot you look forward to for reasons beyond scoring a free TV from an overrun, arson-torched department store.---

Ra Ra Riot (pictured) hail from upstate New York, and their string-laden brand of indie-pop can go in a lot of different directions. Sometimes they'll deliver a dance groove worthy of a Vampire Weekend, and at other times they'll drop an orchestral-pop ballad so beautiful you'll by dumbstruck. Put it all together and you have one of the more dynamic indie crews around. Tuesday night, Ra Ra Riot headlines a gig at In The Venue—a nice leap forward after past SLC visits to Kilby Court and opening for Death Cab for Cutie at Red Butte Garden.

Also on the musical tip, consider the Ryan Montbleau Band show at The State Room, or the Kilby Court triple-bill of Drew Andrews & the Spectral Cities, Kid Theodore and James Tautkus.

If you're looking for something more worldly, an intellectual night out, consider the free lecture at Westminster College at 7 p.m., when New York Times reporter Larry Rohter will discuss "Brazil on the Rise: The Story of a Country Transformed." Rohter is widely considered the leading expert on Brazil after spending 14 years as the Times' bureau chief there, and the country's evolution from a deeply indebted disaster into the world's eighth largest economy and host of the 2016 Olympics is a story worth hearing.
