Rock & Roll Hall of Lame announces 2011 nominees

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, an organization almost as easily mocked by music fans as the Grammys when it comes to common sense, has announced its nominees for 2011.---
The first-time nominees on the ballot are Bon Jovi, Alice Cooper, Tom Waits, Donovan and Neil Diamond.
Also up for consideration are holdovers LL Cool J, Beastie Boys, J. Geils Band, Donna Summer, Chic, Dr. John, Laura Nyro, Joe Tex, Darlene Love and Chuck Willis.
To be eligible for the Rock Hall in 2011, an artist or band must have released a debut single in 1985 or earlier. The top five vote-getters are feted at a bash in March in New York City.
Of the new nominees, Alice Cooper and Neil Diamond seem like no-brainers. But they've been technically eligible for years, so who knows what took the "brains" behind the Hall this long to get them nominated? Tom Waits is a nice thought, but probably not mainstream enough. Same goes for folkie Donovan.
And Bon Jovi? Please. If Kiss and Alice Cooper aren't in, no way those Jersey hair farmers should be. Which probably means they'll be in for sure.
Among the holdovers, I can't imagine the Hall can keep Beastie Boys and LL Cool J out for long, no matter how much the old "rock" guys in charge hate hip-hop. (And they do. Where's Public Enemy? Eric B. and Rakim? The list goes on. They hate punk, too).
Dr. John seems like a solid choice, as does the funktastic Chic. But I thought that last year, too.
My (rose-colored) prediction for 2011's inductees: Neil Diamond, Beastie Boys, Alice Cooper, Dr. John and Darlene Love.
