inFluxdance Review

Members of inFluxdance performed “Justice for Some” this weekend to address the need for equal love.---
Before the performance, the familiar Beatles’ hit “All You Need Is Love” was playing in the Sugar Space as a video screen projected the words “I can’t believe we still have to protest this crap.” As five female dancers moved across the stage, the screen in the back of the room played images of protest.
Restriction and resistance were demonstrated with their movements as human rights issues such as oppression, diversity, freedom of choice, suicide, gay rights, and sexual assault were spoken about or illustrated on the screen. One image in particular featured a sign that read, “Keep your laws off my body,” and dancers illustrated a need to free their spirit and move their bodies, regardless of the instructions spoken in the music. Three dancers moved inside a lit box, their silhouettes struggling to break free.
At times the dancers tried to place restrictions on each other, but throughout most of the performance they expressed a concern and compassion for one another, holding each other up in various poses or leaning on each other for certain movements. Each dancer performed passionately and was committed to delivering her message. The music changed to a more hopeful and uplifting song as the powerful dancing came to an end. The lights went down with dozens of faceless dolls propped into sitting positions around the dancers, symbolizing unity.
