Lounge Act: Tuesday with a writer and a reverend

A hot-shit historical novelist and even hotter pickin' 'n' grinnin' in store on Tuesday.---

I became a fan of E.L. Doctorow by accident, after being assigned his novel Billy Bathgate as part of a gangster film class I was taking. It turned out to be a fortuitous assignment, given that I became enough of a fan to go on to read other Doctorow books like Ragtime, and just this summer, the Civil War-set novel The March. While his books are technically fiction, you'll learn a whole lot of history by reading his work. I'm guessing that's also true when you hear the man talk in person, as he's doing in the student union building at Weber State University Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Free and open to the public.

In Salt Lake City, a couple of music options dominate the options.

At Kilby Court, Utah's own blues prodigy Andrew Goldring is playing, and you can hear how the teenage guitar whiz's style has evolved beyond the blues. Sink the Seas, Brighton Metz and Gabrielle Gioffre are also on the bill. $6, show at 7 p.m.

At The State Room, it's Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band, the hillbilly three-piece that is ALWAYS a gas, gas, gas to see. Not only is the right Reverend a mean guitar-picker, slappin' around his instrument to frenzied effect; you'll also get the furious scratchin' and plucking of washboard ace and the Rev's wife, Breezy Peyton. Throw in the funkiest beard in the biz, and you have a show worth checking out for sure. 8 p.m., $15 at the door.
