This week's cover story features Cpl. Lisa Steed, a controversial cop with the Utah Highway Patrol's drunk driving task force. That story mentions a Taser incident criticized by defense attorneys who have viewed it. We now have the video available on the Web. ---

City Weekly obtained dash-cam footage of an arrest of 24-year-old DUI suspect. Watch unedited video of the suspect being Tased by Steed after he repeatedly asks to speak with his legal representation and declines the Breathalyzer. (About the 3 minute mark.)

According to UHP policy, officers administer a field sobriety test (the walk-the-line test, etc.) prior to giving a Breathalyzer. In this case, Steed begins her investigation by giving the suspect a breathalyzer.

Criminal-defense attorney Tara Isaacson watched the video said that she had never seen an officer accelerate an investigation so quickly. To Isaacson, the use of the Taser was the most disturbing violation amongst others because the DUI suspect is being polite to the officer. The complete investigation revealed that the driver tested positive for alcohol and marijuana.

Keeping drunks off the road is Steed's job but it makes me wonder how necessary it was to shoot electricity into a guy who asked to talk to lawyer. Watch the video and you be judge.
