Is Bob Dylan the new Howard Jones?

United Concerts just made official what the Internet told us weeks ago: Bob Dylan is bringing his so-called "Neverending Tour" back to Utah Aug. 17 for a gig at Deer Valley. And while some of us are cheering, we also have to ask: Again?---

I'm not complaining, but America's greatest rock poet HAS been making an inordinate amount of stops in Zion lately. This will be his third (at least) stop at Deer Valley in recent years, and he's also dropped in on the Usana Amphitheater and Great Saltair for shows. And I'm still waiting for someone to book his annual summer run through minor-league baseball stadiums, a co-bill with Willie Nelson.

The upside of all these Utah stops: another chance to see Bob Dylan and his always-swinging band do their thing. His recent albums have been solid dalliances with Tex-Mex and roots-rock, and Dylan always reworks his old classics into something barely recognizable, but still well worth a listen. The downside: Dylan's rapid-fire series of visits make each show seem less of an EVENT, as they were when he toured after nearly kicking the bucket a decade or so ago. For Utah fans who already rarely buy tickets in advance for anything, regular visits make them even less likely to do so.

Then again, if we're going to get annual visits by any artist, better it be Dylan than Howard Jones, or 311, or Kenny Chesney (the list goes on, and on, and on, like Dylan's tour).

Tickets for Dylan's tour go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m. at all Smith's Tix outlets.
