The Crusade for the Homeless Foundation is asking for a little help. Just 1 percent of your yearly income, paid in convenient installments to help create an endowment to provide affordable housing for Utah’s poor.---
In 2004 Utah joined ten other states in the National Campaign to End Homelessness, during which time Utah built 500 supportive housing units through public-private partnerships. While that’s a good start, advocates believe it will take 2,500 more units to care for all of Utah’s chronically homeless. The crusade was officially kicked off this past Sunday by Governor Gary Herbert. The effort is joined by all major Utah churches including the Catholic Diocese, the Episcopal Diocese and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The foundation itself was organized by former Salt Lake Tribune publisher John Gallivan, with the sole goal of creating an endowment to end homelessness in Utah.
With enough funds the foundation can create supportive housing that not only gives the homeless a roof over their heads but links them in with caseworkers, employment and health care resources. The ultimate goal is $100 million, but it can’t be realized without your help. Learn more or contribute at the group’s website or over the phone, 801-263-4099.
