Local reggae band Natural Roots will be playing at the new Kava Roots Café on Thursday, June 10 at a fundraising event for former keyboardist Samo Aiono,--- whose father passed away last week and whose mother is currently on life support.

According to Kava Roots Café (815 E 2100 South, 801-381-3838) owners Darren Johns and Tamaiti Murray, the Kava Roots Café has not opened officially yet, but has been opening its doors to do small fundraisers and for locals. Tomorrow’s fundraiser is the first full-blown fundraiser before the official grand opening schedule for June 18, but the café hopes to continue giving back to the community.

“Every ninety days, we try to do a fundraiser for a good cause,” Johns said. “We’re an organic cultural experience, and we just want to raise the vibration for culture through the area.”

The fundraiser for Natural Roots, which has been together since 2004, was a spur of the moment idea after Johns and Murray learned of the Aiono family’s recent hardships. As the oldest member of his family, Samo Aiono is now in charge of paying the bills and supporting his family financially and the fundraiser is geared towards helping him make those payments.

Samo Aiono does not play with the band anymore due to the emotional struggle he has been facing, but band producer Johnny, who is also known as DJ Dubwise Selecta, said that he hopes the fundraising event will alleviate some of the stress.

“When you’re having a bad time, that’s bad enough, but when you’ve got a financial burden on top of that, that puts you in a bad state of mind,” Johnny said. “We want to kind of take that trouble away for a night.”

The Kava Roots Café is suggesting a $10 donation for the event. Doors will open around 9 p.m. and the band will play around 10 p.m. or 10:30 p.m.
