While cut short due to lightning, Sunday night’s Kenny Wayne Shepherd performance at Red Butte Gardens, was definitely a success.---

Besides the spectacular light show provided by mother nature herself, concert goers were treated to great music and, of course, gorgeous scenery.

Local musicians Blues On First opened with songs inspired by the likes of classic artists such as Sam Cooke and Elmore James. Blues On First did a wonderful job at preparing the crowd for Kenny Wayne Sheperd with both original songs and covers.

Shepherd and his band did nothing to disappoint those who braved the heat and then rain. Performing songs from their five albums such as Trouble Is, as well as a new song, Never Looking Back, Shepherd was a hit with the audience from the very beginning. While not super traditional sounding, the blues were absolutely present.

As usual, organizers at Red Butte did a great job at providing Salt Lake’s live music fans with a strong summer lineup. This summer’s slate includes such big names as Norah Jones, Sheryl Crow and Willie Nelson. The food provided by Whole Foods should be noted as a immediate upgrade to years past as well.

If the Kenny Wayne Shepherd/Blues On First performance was any indication, this year's Red Butte Concert Series will undoubtedly be something to look forward to all summer long.
