The best deal for music fans this weekend isn't at a club or even at night. It's the Park City Saturday afternoon opening of a free traveling Smithsonian exhibit exploring American roots music called New Harmonies.---

The full name is actually New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music, and the show will be bouncing around Utah for the rest of the year, including stops in Boulder, Moab, Cedar City and West Jordan after its time at the Park City Museum. And while the free show will be in Park City until May 25, Saturday's opening ceremonies include a free 2:30 lecture by exhibit curator Robert Santelli at the Egyptian Theater.

Santelli is an academic deeply steeped in America's musical forms. He was one of the original curators of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, then worked at the Experience Music Project in Seattle. He's currently the director of the Grammy Museum.

Not only will the New Harmonies show help Utahns get a better understanding of the vast array of native American musical forms; it will help us know ourselves a little better, too. Every stop of the New Harmonies national tour includes a localized component, so expect to learn a bit about the music of Utah's American Indian tribes, the early music of Mormon pioneers and the spirituals of Utah's earliest black residents.
