In a way it's perfectly fitting: An "is this for real?" press release for a symposium focusing on an "is this for real?" local filmmaker. ---

Just arrived in the City Weekly editorial inbox is an announcement for an event to be held tomorrow (April 10) beginning at 10 a.m. at the Provo City Library, sponsored by Sego Art Center. The subject: a "symposium" on the work of Stephen Groo, the Utah-based independent filmmaker whose short films, videos and "extended trailers" have often inspired speculation about how seriously they are meant to be taken. His "Tribute to Utah 2005" video (a parody of the Beach Boys' "Kokomo" filled with Utah town names) became a minor viral phenomenon a few years ago, and he got people talking about his super-size She-Hulk trailer; a still from Groo's in-production Resident Evil: The Missing Chapter is pictured. But a "symposium?"

The release promises screenings of selected short films, a keynote lecture by BYU film professor Dean Duncan, and -- seriously -- "paper presentations, panel and open conversation." So if you happened to have an academic analysis of the oeuvre du Groo just collecting dust in a drawer somewhere, now would be the time to break it out.

The Provo City Library Website as of this writing includes no information about the event; calls to the library attempting to confirm the event reached voice mailboxes. So either this is a slightly behind-the-curve April Fool's Day joke ... or it could be one of the awesomest film studies events in this state, like, ever.
