2010 Utah Bike Summit

Avid bikers and politicians Council Member Luke Garrott and Mayor Ralph Becker, with a little help from some local nonprofits, will be throwing the shindig aimed at facilitating dialogue between policymakers and activists about all things bike. The theme for this year is "Building Strong Voices for Bicycling," and will include your typical keynote speeches and breakout sessions. But, this is an opportunity to do more than be lectured at. Here you can address your key concerns (road-rage set aside) to the people in charge—they'll be all ears. Much of the two-day event will be an open space forum with audience-generated issues; so, you decide where the conversations go.
After a "warm-up ride" Friday of introductions, a keynote speech and the first breakout session, join the soiree at the Gallivan Center Stage for the Policymakers Meet and Greet, hosted by Specialized and Bingham Cyclery, with adult beverages and food provided, from 5:15-7:15 p.m. Check out the full agenda. I'd recommend biking to the event—no one likes double standards.
Here's a couple of important tips you won't learn at the Bicycle Summit:
--When it comes to road rage, always give a thumbs down, instead of flipping the bird. It's way more demeaning and probably won't get you run over.
--When it comes to staying visible, don't compromise fashion. Go with Dark Orange or Burnt Orange over Orange Peel or DayGlo Orange. In the same vein, a neat, crisp pant-leg roll looks better than a haphazard, sloppy one.
--When deciding to de-layer and commute, at least be aware of who you might be offending.
--There is a biker hiearchy (as far as coolness); gracefully bow down as necessary. It's as follows: no handlebar riders, fixies, winter bike commuters, vintage bike owners, mountain bikers, regular commuters, electric motor bikes, phone-talking bikers and, lastly, tandem bikers.
