Second-season Utah roller-derby league Wasatch Roller Derby played their first bout of the 2010 season on Saturday, Feb. 6 at the Salt Palace. WRD recaps the action: ---

Last Saturday night, Wasatch Roller Derby (WRD) blew the doors off the Salt Palace in Utah’s derby season opener. It was standing room only, as over 700 fans filled every vacant space in the venue. Fans included newcomers, veteran skaters, long-time fans, and even the French National Olympic Short-track Speed Skating Team. The crowd was rowdy and excited to see Blue Steel and Black Onyx battle it out for bragging rights. It was a night of black eyes, bruised thighs, hard falls and good calls. The tension was palatable as the ladies of WRD lined up on the flat track awaiting the whistle that marked the beginning of the game and the start to the 10-plus month season of hard-hitting competition that lies ahead.

Long-time crowd favorites like Queen Anne’s Revenge and Kinky KillBasa set fire to the floors for Black Onyx while heavy hitters Dr. Payne and new league transfer Miss E.vil (formerly playing for Duke City) walled off the front end for Blue Steel. New recruit Crystal Ball Breaker showed everyone that she has what it take to play derby, undaunted by heavy hits and hard falls that come with the territory. This game also marked the return of veteran skaters, Medusa Damage, Renegade Roller (formerly Salt Lick), and Moxi Rotten, each coming back after a season away. They returned with fire in their eyes, swiftness in their skates, and a passion for the game that was palpable through the crowd. Black Onyx looked to rack up the points with a depth of talented jammers, but in the end it was a blockers game, as Blue Steel held them back and refused to let them score. After numerous thunderous hits and countless trips to the penalty box, Blue Steel came out on top, 120-72.

While this showcase of talent was the featured event of the evening, the highlight was the opportunity to support a great cause. Wasatch Roller Derby held this event to benefit the Utah Parent Center. Representatives of the charity in attendance were thrilled with the support and the turn out, and said that they had a great time.

Wasatch Roller Derby and the Wasatch Women’s Club are proud to announce that they will be donating $2300 to the charity from the bout proceeds. We couldn’t have done it without our fans and friends, and we can’t wait to see you all at the next game where the Midnight Terror (WRD travel team) will take on the Treasure Valley Roller Girls (Boise, Idaho). This will be the first flat-track roller derby interleague game in Utah for 2010. Come check us out Saturday, Feb. 27, 7:30 pm at Hollywood Connection (3217 S. Decker Lake Drive, West Valley City, Utah 84119). This is a change in venues so be sure to mark you calendar!
