Tonight's Live Music Picks

What's that? All tuckered out from the weekend? Well grab an extra cup of coffee, some Red Bull and possibly that strange energy extract available in the check-out lines at Whole Foods because the party isn't over yet.--- Sundance happenings continue in Park City and Salt Lake City with performances by Dave Navarro (a special acoustic performance at Downstairs, 625 Main) and bands featured in The Taqwacores, a movie based on a novel that sparked a real-life Muslim-punk movement. “They aren’t so far removed as you might think—both began in tremendous bursts of truth and vitality, but seemed to have lost something along the way,” writes author Michael Knight of Islam and punk traditions. The novel’s cinematic adaptation will screen at this week’s Sundance Film Festival and tonight a group of musicians featured in the movie including The Kominas, Al-Thawra and Filmstrip will perform live at Star Bar (268 Main, Park City).

Down in the valley, local/regional bands continue to transform Beehive Tea Room into a hoppin' live-music venue with Sarah Sample headlining tonight. Show starts at 7 p.m.

In non-festival news, Ivan Neville Dumpstaphunk brings the funk to The State Room (638 S. State). Son of Aaron “Everybody Plays the Fool” Neville, the seasoned keyboardist easily found his place in an ancestral line blessed with natural abilities. His education included backing duties for Keith Richards and Bonnie Raitt, plus gigs with the family band. Dumpstaphunk is his own creation—double-bass-powered blues/funk/ R&B with its heart fully planted in New Orleans.

And last but certainly not least, Adam Franklin and Bolts of Melody headline Urban Lounge (241 S. State). The singer/songwriter/guitarist of UK shoegaze kings Swervedriver hits town in support of new material including the single, "I Could Sleep for a Thousand Years." Local psych-rockers Plastic Furs (formerly Furs) and The Astrals will open the trippy, beautiful evening.
