Good Horses, Fast Women: Bela Fleck & The Flecktones

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones brought cheer and their funky melodies to Kingsbury Hall last night. The less than capacity crowd created an intimate experience. Joy filled the air, and it was obvious the band was enjoying their return to Salt Lake City.---
Individually, members of the Flecktones are acknowledged as the top echelon for their respective instruments. Bela has been nominated for more Grammys in more categories than anyone in music history. Have you ever seen someone play two saxophones at once? Jeff Coffin does it easily. It is easy to be the best when you invent your own instrument; Futureman's fingers played drum-like sounds on his Cimitar for his second-set opening solo. After bassist Vic Wooton finished his elongated solo, a medley featuring excerpts from The Nutcracker, the audience gave a standing ovation.
For better or worse, this was one of the few times the crowd got out of their seats. I have seen the Flecktones several times in their homeland of Tennessee; every time, crowds danced with fervor. Kingsbury Hall was a mellow setting; on the upside, the sound at Kingsbury incredibly captured the tonal delicacies of the band.
The Flecktones featured many songs from their latest release Jingle All the Way, including "The Twelve Days of Christmas" in 12 different keys. Bela forewarned the front row: "Our brains might explode by the end of this one." Additional highlights included Alash, throat singers and folk musicians, from Tuven (Siberia). Their manager, and later Bela jokingly, described that their songs were mainly about good horses and fast women.
