If you are penny-pinchin' because the economy is down, or just plain frugal, but still desirous to experience some culture and compulsory indulgence: Look no further. Periodically, I will inform the masses about the fun, the free, the charming, and the cheap.
From listening to local dignitaries and human rights advocates to learning how to stay alive in (or away from) avalanches, there is plenty to fill your weekend with:---

 

Human Rights Day Reception and Refugee Exhibit

  Celebrate dignity and justice for all. Guest speaker: George Cheney, executive Director, University of Utah's Tanner Nonviolent Human Rights Advocacy Center. Refugee Photo Exhibit and Reception will feature artists from Somalia; handmade items available for purchase. Suggested admission: Donate a winter item which will be given to refugee families. Free. Creativity in Focus: Manufactured Landscapes

      Manufactured Landscapes is a striking new documentary on the world and work of renowned artist Edward Burtynsky, acclaimed for his large-scale photographs of the evidence and effects of China’s massive industrial revolution. Best Documentary Feature and Best Canadian Feature - 2006 Toronto Film Critics Association; Best Documentary - 2007 Genie Awards; Best Documentary - 2007 River Run International Film Festival. Creativity in Focus is a series of films that will take place the second Friday of each month. Presented in partnership with the SLC Film Center. Films not rated.
