Now available: Wanda Sykes' I'ma Be Me

Synopsis: Wanda Sykes delivers 90 minutes of laugh-out-loud, relentless stand-up hilarity in Washington, D.C. ---

Rating: 4.5 out of 5

How to navigate: Select > On Demand | Premium Channels | HBO On Demand | HBO Specials | Comedy Specials | Wanda: I'ma Be Me

Remarks: Sykes is my favorite TV lesbian at the moment. She's a rescue-worker, really: Her presence on The New Adventures of Old Christine rescues Julia Louis-Dreyfus from being the show's only glimmer of light. Her occasional appearances on Curb Your Enthusiasm rescues Larry David from the curiously homo-free realm he seems to occupy in Los Angeles. And her performance at the 2009 White House Correspondents' Association dinner in May rescued conservatives from the fantasy that Rush Limbaugh is somehow immune to parody. (Well, apparently, some of them still missed the point.)

I'ma Be Me is a comedic tour-de-force. Sykes divides the hour-and-a-half into three roughly-30-minute segments: the first is about being black, the second is about being a lesbian, and the third is really just filthy (her bit about Kegel exercises had us falling off the sofa).

As advertised, it goes "clean-to-dirty" -- and you'll love every minute.
