Up for grabs

Don't write off Real Salt Lake just yet. ---

Their friendly tonight against Mexican team Chivas offers coach Jason Kreis a chance to see who on his roster is really hungry to succeed. It's dog eat dog out there and on Rio Tinto's grass in Sandy every single player Kreis made clear in the dailies this morning will have to fight for a spot in the first of the last three games in the season. Real have to win all three to squeak into the play-offs. Judging by recent past form it's way beyond a long shot. Judging by history though Real are always at their best -- or at least their luckiest -- when they've got their backs to the wall.

And it's not just the play-offs players must be thinking about. The expansion draft in January means that Real will only be able to protect 11 players from being transferred. Who will they release? If Kreis' mood in his comments today are anything to go by, what he calls "shitty life decisions" on his players' future may well be easier to make after the recent streak of loses and draws.

So while it's just a friendly, there's much to play for, not least the future of every player on the team.
