Gourmet ... going, going, gone.

Long before the term "foodie" became in vogue, there were people known as gourmets. For sixty-eight years, Gourmet magazine catered to these food aficionados, with its tasty recipes, beautiful photography and top-notch food and travel writing. --- Now, after the November 2009 issue of Gourmet, the magazine will cease publication.

I don't really read food magazines very often anymore, but I have a soft place in my heart for Gourmet. I remember a time when the essays, foods and recipes that filled the pages of Gourmet were positively exotic -- to me, anyhow. I remember the first Gourmet recipe I ever tried. In an attempt to cook my way into a woman's heart (or at least into her bed), I recall utilizing a Gourmet recipe for prawns with shallots and cognac cream sauce. I don't remember how it tasted, but I remember the results (wink, wink).

I learned to cook sole Meuniere and red snapper with mustard crust a la Cafe des Artistes from Gourmet. And my first excursions into wine were prompted by the magazines great wine columns, just as my first visits to cathedrals of dining like Lutece were based on reviews in Gourmet.

A few years ago I finally threw out the stacks and stacks of Gourmet magazines I'd been hoarding for years, but not before going through each one, page by page, and tearing out recipes I'd want to keep. I'm already kicking myself for tossing those mags into the dumpster. Like many of you, I'll miss Gourmet.
