Dating for swingers

Swinging is notoriously cliquey. Go to a meet-and-greet at a club to hook up with another couple and, particularly if you’re a single male, the reception can be chilly. If you’re overweight and it’s a crowd of snobs who think themselves good looking, you’re toast. ---

Recent controversy among Utah swingers over www.swingular.com has highlighted the site’s importance as the primary forum for meeting swingers in Utah. But complain about bullying on the site by a self-appointed swinging elite and you can end up being kicked off and effectively ostracized from the community. Or so one poster claimed following a CW blog called Drama in Swingtown about highly questionable behavior at a recent swingers’ party.

Eden Church’s Cindy, the pastor of a hedonistic non-profit dedicated to swinging, was the subject of a profile in City Weekly’s Christmas issue last year called ‘Swap Meet.’ After the story came out, Utah members of swingular.com viciously condemned her on-line for bringing publicity to “the lifestyle” as swingers call it. Oddly some of those same swingular posters complaining about Cindy had several years before invited a TV channel to a meet-and-greet, only to get badly burned by the resulting coverage.

Cindy thinks it’s time for a change. So she’s introducing speed dating for couples. She’s already set up a website, www.swingersblend.com, to promote her idea. “Speed dating has worked forever for singles,” she says. “Why can’t we do it for couples?”

The first speed-dating session for swingers, which will also include single men who want to join in, will take place at the end of the month, Cindy says. Afterwards she wants to hold a free house-party at Eden Church. Or perhaps simply rent a suite of rooms for swingers to get to know who they’ve hooked up with.
