SLC alcohol normalization proposal released

The mayor has something to say to you about your drinking....

Dear Salt Lake City Residents:

Salt Lake City has some of the most restrictive, self-imposed alcohol regulations in the state of Utah. For over 100 years, Salt Lake City has heavily regulated the sale of alcohol. The scope and consistency of these regulations have varied widely over the last century, and various revisions have, over time, resulted in cumbersome and even contradictory City codes.

Following the groundbreaking changes to alcohol regulation made by the State Legislature in 2009, the City began exploring how to revise the zoning and licensing of establishments that sell alcohol in order to comply with new state laws, The City has also been exploring and evaluating the possible revision of additional restrictions that go beyond state law and may be appropriate for our community.

The City has drafted a proposed ordinance that we believe supports local business development by clarifying zoning and business licensing regulations governing establishments that sell alcohol in Salt Lake City. The City would like any revisions of its code to be clear, sensible and balanced to support our shared vision for thriving, walkable commercial centers.

I am requesting your input on this important undertaking before a final proposed ordinance is transmitted to the City Council for action.

Please submit your comments to by Friday, September 25, 2009. All comments will be included in the official public record.

In addition to this public comment period, you will have an opportunity to comment on the proposed ordinance during the Planning Commission and City Council review process. This process includes multiple public hearings and may include additional requests for written comment.
