Kick off the weekend with a drive up the canyon Uncle Uncanny's music festival featuring more than 30 local and regional bands including our former super intern Greg playing this very second with his band The Astrals.--- Other highlights include Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Furs, Naked Eyes, Joseph Israel, Oh! Wild Birds, Afro Omega and James Shook, among others. The festival runs through Sunday.

Love Emergency - Afro Omega

Grunge pioneers Melvins head tonight's bill along with “supporting” act Down. Brought to you by chronic, the Southern-metal project is a bona fide supergroup, with members of Arson Anthem, Eyehategod, Corrosion of Conformity, Crowbar and Pantera shoveling out delightfully brutal, technically proficient noise. Weedeater’s frontman makes Melvins’ King Buzzo seem nearly sedate as he issues vocal projections reminiscent of Gollum (substitute “My precious” for any lyric off God Luck and Good Speed). His scary, scummy, otherwordly screech comes with a heaping side of meaty sludge. Rumor has it that THE Bill Frost will be at the show!! In the Venue, 579 W. 200 South, 6 p.m. All-ages. Also tonight, The Fucktards join Tragic Black for a raucous and strange lineup at Club Edge. Future of the Ghost plays with touring act Octopus Project (hopefully - van problems put the kibosh on their Slowtrain in-store) at The Urban Lounge. Wish FOG drummer Cathy Foy a very happy birthday!

Arguably, the highlight of the weekend hits Red Butte Garden on Sunday with The Pretenders, Cat Power and Juliette Lewis. Can't wait to see Chrissie Hynde strut her stuff. Many of tonight’s attendees might be more excited to see co-headliners Juliette Lewis and Cat Power, the latter of whom actually crafted two records of covers that do justice to the originals. Her bluesy, raspy delivery is intoxicating, especially now that she seems to have largely overcome her once-famous stage fright. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
