Hot Sen-on-Sen Action

According to John Colapinto's story in The New Yorker--yeah, old news, but I was on vacation--there was a lot of senatorial love flowing in the U.S. Senate chambers the day Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn, was finally admitted to that august body:--- %uFFFD

At his swearing-in, Franken was welcomed by repeated rounds of applause from his fellow-senators—including Republicans—who had shown up in force for the ceremony. Orrin Hatch, Republican of Utah, gave him a bear hug on the Senate floor ...

Maybe I've been too hard on Hatch: Whenever he says something nice about a Democrat, or makes a warm gesture, I always brace myself for some mercilessly calculated vengeful act that is sure to follow. But for Hatch to engage in such a bold, public display of affection--one that would get tackled by security thugs had it transpired on the Main Street Plaza--is either a very decent thing, or forebodes that Franken will have to watch his back.

Let's accentuate the positive: Bravo, Sen. Hatch! Perhaps I've misjudged you. We can only hope so, for Franken's sake.
