Happy Birthday, Bugs

One of the most celebrated stars in movie history was born today. If it weren't for the fact that he's always been prematurely grey, you probably wouldn't guess his age. ---

On July 27, 1940, the animated short A Wild Hare -- directed by Tex Avery -- appeared in theaters, pitting inept hunter Elmer Fudd against a bunny named Bugs. The primitive design (generally credited to and named after animator Ben "Bugs" Hardaway) notwithstanding, the short marks the first definitive appearance of the character who would go on to define Warner Bros.' "Merrie Melodies" and "Looney Tunes" stable. So what if he may have been copied in part from Disney's "Max Hare" character? Doin' it first ain't nearly as important as doin' it best.

You may now qualify for Social Security, Bugs, but you're still a universal symbol for social anarchy.
