Race Out and Rent

Yes, there's Watchmen. It's clearly the big gorilla of the DVD release week, despite its under-performance at the box office and a decidedly mixed reaction from both fans and critics. And it's worth a look, if for no other reason than it's an object lesson in how to please neither the hard-core fans nor the uninitiated when it comes to adapting a beloved piece of pop literature.

A far more engrossing example of fantasy adaptation is Henry Selick's version of Neil Gaiman's Coraline. Watching at home will probably be less creepy for kids than watching in a big, dark theater, but still be aware of youngsters' sensitivities. And never fear if you missed the theatrical 3-D; the DVD release comes with four pairs of glasses, in addition to a 2-D version.
