Race Out and Rent

New fodder for your Netflix queue? The pickings have been pretty slim lately, as the studios burn off the trash they generally dump into theaters in January and February.

Finally, though, a little good news: Waltz With Bashir, the gripping animated documentary from director Ari Folman, arrives today. It's an entirely new approach to the filters that survivors of war create to mediate the horrors, and it all builds to a surprisingly devastating conclusion. Flawed, but also worth a look, is the 2008 Sundance holdover Phoebe in Wonderland, about a family dealing with their daughter's undiagnosed emotional and/or neurological issues.

Surely Confessions of a Shopaholic and The Pink Panther 2 can wait.
