A torrential downpour didn’t stop friends, fans and family from gathering at Kilby Court last night to celebrate Spy Hop Records’ CD release party. Songwriting whiz kid Sam Burton and hip hop prodigy Malevolent MC performed material from their debut releases Definition and Got Sent Up.

Despite their youth, their performances and albums are surprisingly sophisticated. Both display effortless stage presence that reflects their dedication and years of practicing their craft at local open mics. The albums themselves showcase the collective effort of Spy Hop productions. Everything from the album artwork to the kids working the merch table proves the albums are a clear labor of love by teens and young adults who simply love making music and want to share it.

The releases are the first of much more this year from the non-profit, youth-run record label. You can pick up Malevolent MC’s Definition and Sam Burton’s Got Sent Up at Graywhale, Slowtrain, Positively 4th Street or online at www. Spyhop.org.
