Tuesday, May 28 is the day the Cal Supremes have selected to issue their ruling on Proposition 8, a California ballot initiative enacted under the assumption that a bare majority of voters may, by referendum, revoke the pre-existing constitutional rights of a minority.

For instance, using Prop. 8 logic, if 52 percent of Californians believe their automobiles are threatened by the existence of left-handed drivers, they are perfectly justified, by referendum, to revoke the drivers licenses of all California southpaws.

In this case, it was 52 percent of Californians who allowed themselves to be frightened by a deceptive TV-ad campaign* into thinking that it is constitutionally reasonable for a bare majority of voters to revoke the legally recognized right of gay and lesbian Californians to marry whom they wish.

So, May 28 is the ... dun-dun-DUN!!! ... Day of Decision (I was trying to write this phrase out in ominous truck-rally echoes like this: "DAY-Day-day OF-Of-of DECISION-Ision-ision" but it didn't read correctly). I guess a bunch of us are going up to the south lawn of the Capitol Building at 6:30 p.m. either to 1. (preferably) wildly celebrate the California Supreme Court's wise decision, or 2. (almost as much fun) bitterly protest its lame-ass ruling. Which one will it be? Show up and find out!!!

For those who don't know, the Capitol Building's south lawn is at the very tippy-top of State Street, near the "Practically Naked Hunk" statue (pictured)--that is, if the Eagle Forum hasn't yet had it removed.

* This ad campaign was evidently funded largely by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (which is lucky in that its status as the Only True Church on the Face of the Earth apparently grants it the unique ability to ignore finance-disclosure laws in its many political campaigns which, traditionally, the church has seemed very interested in keeping secret for some time).
