Last night Shake Your Peace, the green-traveling bicycle gypsy band from San Francisco, opened their Northern Utah pedaling tour at the Old Main Amphitheater in Logan. To get there, they loaded their modified bicycles onto the Amtrak from San Fran to Salt Lake, then took an express bus to Cache Valley and pedaled to the outdoor amphitheater on the USU campus.

They call their art “human-powered music” because it's amplified by an electric generator connected to their bicycles, and powered by audience members who volunteer to come up on stage and pedal in place. This year, aside from the usual open invitation for anyone who feels like joining the caravan to come along (á la Forrest Gump's cross-country tour) SYP has invited a group of local sustainability experts to ride along with them and give short eco-pep talks between sets.

Walk, take public transpo, or ride your beach cruiser to the SYP show in your town (they're pedaling from Logan to Provo, including Park City and Heber), but be warned—the band's charm and charisma will likely convert you into a home-gardening, car-ditching hippie radical. Then things might get awkward come Thanksgiving when you have to explain to your extended family why you showed up to dinner all sweaty.

I'll be riding along with the happy hippies for the duration of the tour, so stay tuned for reports from the road. Find May 4-17 tour dates for the Fourth Annual Utahpia Now! SYP Bike Tour at ShakeYourPeace.com, and come ready to pedal.
