As someone who was raised on a steady diet of rock and classic metal, I've always felt rather uncultured and sadly out of the classical music loop. Maybe that's why I'm so stoked on The Portland Cello Project, a group of classically trained cellists who team up with indie rock and folk musicians to perform unique covers and original tunes. Past PCP collaborators include Laura Gibson and Weinland, the latter of which will be stopping by the KRCL studios for an on-air gig at 5 p.m. today with Mr. Bad Brad Wheeler.
The group's community radio spot precedes two live appearances, first a 7 p.m. all-ages show at Slowtrain followed by a gig at Urban Lounge at 10 p.m. with openers The Devil Whale, fresh off a lengthy drive from Seattle.
The Portland Cello Project recently worked with Thao Nguyen for a forthcoming LP out June 9. Thao plays Kilby tomorrow night with Samantha Crain. Can a Samantha Crain and PCP project be far behind? Let the circle be unbroken!
