The fight over Las Vegas’ application to drill on the Utah border for groundwater to be piped to Sin City remains at a standstill. While water moguls, courts and bureaucrats in Nevada and Utah weigh their next steps, now is a good time to enjoy some of the weird animals scientists are still discovering in the Great Basin desert.

The creatures in this link were discovered at Great Basin National Park inside caves that plunge up to 480 feet underground. Park scientists believe the creatures—including one that looks like a scorpion but is only one-fourth of an inch long—may be found no where else on earth. And some worry the cave creatures could be harmed if Las Vegas pumping plans suck water from the park. Samples of the creatures have been sent to experts for identification.
