If "degree of difficulty" were the primary criterion for evaluating a film, Observe and Report would be a home run. But as off-center and risky as Jody Hill's comedy may be, it's just not funny enough. And the dark side he's aiming for in his central character -- a delusional, violent "head of mall security" -- doesn't work with Seth Rogen in the role.

The rest of the new releases slate this week is also sort of a mixed bag. Our MaryAnn Johanson fancied the family drama The Cake Eaters, but only one great performance keeps the Swedish period-piece Everlasting Moments from being a waste of time. And Hannah Montana: The Movie entices its target tween audience, and little more.

How many weeks until summer movie season starts?
